In June 2018 the Swiss voted on a radical change to the banking system.

The Vollgeld, or sovereign-money, proposal would ban private banks from creating money: only the central bank would have that power, and the public would hold current accounts with it. Private banks’ lending would be fully funded by savings accounts, or borrowing of their own.

the Swiss voters rejected in a “landslide” of approximately 75% of negative votes the proposal of the sovereign-money project.
